The CLOREVAL project aims to quantify the current performance of space-based LWP estimates by validating against in situ measurements - principally using aircraft cloud probes - and other airborne and surface-based microwave remote-sensing instruments. This validation will be set against target User Requirements of the NWP and climate modelling community, and the project will make full use of special field campaign datasets to quantify practical improvements in both basic understanding of the physical interaction of microwave radiation with clouds and precipitation, and the application of that knowledge in the retrieval techniques which can be used to derive LWP to the required accuracy for later use in weather forecasting and climate monitoring and prediction.
